This book was given to me by a friend in a box of books and I was told it was one of the better romances I agree Perhaps because it wasn t only romanceI enjoyed reading about the interactions between the nanny and the child Probably a third of the book or dwelt on their growing relationship and it was a sweet slow gentle read It s reminiscent of Moses s birth mother getting paid to take care of her infant Moses after Pharaoh s daughter adopted him Exodus 21 10 But there are plenty of differences between that story and The Nanny s Secret Child too The child in this book is grade school aged rather than an infant and the circumstances leading up to this situation were vastly different tooThe romance part of it wasn t bad either and the theme verse and the way it was woven into the story was well done subtle but present Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor for we are all members of one body Ephesians 425 We got to see how various hidden secrets and lies played out in the characters livesMy favorite uote was Self esteem doesn t come from lavishly praising a child for each little accomplishment or from rescuing them from unpleasant situations It comes from teaching them to solve problems letting them fail and then showing them they are loved whether they succeed or not Then you give them a chance to try againI don t have the mystery of self esteem figured out why some people have confidence in their own value and others don t But I d have to agree with the first sentence in that uote Recently one of my own kids wanted to know why I was praising them for something They wanted to know if it was tied to something concrete they did or whether it was just motherly sentimentality Fortunately I was able to think of three things recently that teen had done well And I think it probably does help as the uote says above to grow an ability to problem solve and to know they are loved regardlessBut I would balance the uote and the common philosophies on self esteem with this article this topic I think about the verse Romans 123 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you Do not think of yourself highly than you ought but rather think of yourself with sober judgment in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you We should think about ourselves realistically with sober judgment both the good and the bad But there is hope even in the bad because of JesusI had only a few little nit pick with this book The lady in the story gets her hair trapped in thorns and whimpers Really Maybe yanks it free or shouts and laughs about it but whimpers I ll even allow her to wince if she ll laugh about it Of course maybe I grew up around woods and thorns but even the little kids I knew wouldn t whine much less whimper about that Chubby little girl legs covered in thorn marks and never a care in the world much less a grown woman whimpering about itAnd no as someone who has worked with electricity I just can t see Gil making the mistake that he did which ended up shocking him I don t care how distracted and out of practice he was at it He owned the business He had experience YOU ALWAYS TURN THE POWER OFF BEFORE YOU WIRE SOMETHING It should have been second nature to him And I don t even see what purpose that scene had in the bookIn real life I m not sure the situation with Pam SPOILER would be resolved so easily with understanding but yes it was good for Gil to trySpeaking of Gil his name is probably too reminiscent of a classic romance s male character Thankfully the character traits themselves were different It did make me wonder if the author was thinking of that other romance at allA friend of mine would point out that the characters in this book although they attended church never said what they actually believe They could believe almost anything and still fit into the story The Complete Excuses Handbook The Definitive Guide to Avoiding Blame and Shirking Responsibility for All Your Own Miserable Failings and Sloppy Mistakes u.
