SUMMARY ó Ghouls in My Grave Contains1 Gold Teeth 2 The Shadowy Street 3 I Killed Alfred Heavenrock 4 The Cemetery Watchman. The crown jewel of a recent bookstore haul of mine at least as far as rarity is concerned Ghouls in My Grave which collects eight of the Belgian author s weird tales from the 20s and 30s was a bit of a mixed bag for me with the two best stories being the most oft reprinted The Mainz Psalter a tale that reminded me of William Hope Hodgson s sea tales as well as the later novella The Other Side of the Mountain 1967 by Michael Bernanos in that it s a weird adventure at sea story where there s an eerie shift in reality as there are no birds about the rats have all jumped overboard and the crew is one by one snatched away bysomething and The Shadowy Street which consists of two interlocking stories the first of which concerns a family s phantasmagorical experiences within their home and the second of which relates the tale of a man who comes across a mysterious alley no one else can see and which leads to a nightmarish though still rather unclear conclusion Both of these novelette length stories as well as Bernanos The Other Side of The Mountain can be found in Ann and Jeff Vandermeer s indispensable anthology The WeirdThere are other tales here that are worth reading especially the unsettling The Last Traveler about a man who s incessantly stalked in the snow by an unseen presence and The Cemetery Watchman in which a man hired to watch over a vast necropolis discovers that the other watchmen have been meeting unsavory ends though none of these other stories are as essential as The Mainz Psalter or The Shadowy Street which can easily be found elsewhere The tales are mostly run of the mill 30s pulp and don t really stand apart from Ray s American contemporaries like Lovecraft and Merritt imo Still the stories mentioned above definitely make it worth getting if you come across it but it s not worth paying the exorbitant prices I ve seen online35 Stars

SUMMARY ó Ghouls in My Grave 5 The Mainz Psalter 6 The Last Traveler 7 The Black Mirror 8 Mr Glass Changes Direction Autho. It s a very weird experience reading a Flemish horror writer whose best known work is set in that suitably ancient and haunted terrain only to find him instead using the sinister environs of Stoke Newington But hey Abney Park is pretty spooky too and Arthur Machen wrote an absolute masterpiece of the uncanny about that neck of the woods so maybe this could work But that s not the only story with a British setting and Ray is not entirely au fait with British names or forms of address or else translator Lowell Bair is not suitably localising them and so we also get gems like this Don t be sad MrDave she stammered An estate in Doncaster can t bring happiness Which is true as far as it goes but maybe doesn t strike uite the right note for a story intended to chill Let alone the bit where someone wins money betting on the racing at Norwood whichI m not saying has never happened but I m struggling to work out where because I live there and it is not a flat area There are two very good stories here the longest ones The Shadowy Street and The Mainz Psalter and yes the latter has an annoying bit suggesting one would see the same constellations from Aldebaran as Earth but it also has the fabulous line We spoke little I think we had even stopped thinking Both of them capture something of the same cosmic horror the same corrosive uncertainty about the nature of the whole world as the best of Lovecraft without the overfamiliarity and Derlethian cataloguing that have drawn some of his sting But both of them are also available in the Vandermeers excellent anthology The Weird and you can get the whole monster slaying brick of that for less than old copies of this slim volume which I note with some resentment originally retailed for 50 cents Sure some of the other stories in this do have their moments especially The Cemetery Watchman but unless and until someone republishes this affordably I couldn t recommend seeking it out

[Ghouls in My Grave] EBOOK READ I read two of these stories previously in the Vandermeers' collection The Weird; The Shadowy Street and The Mainz Psalter These are masterpieces of weird fiction but what I remembered about them was they weren't just weird they were actually scary tooAt his best Ray's stories generate a thick uncanny atmosphere and some genuinely creepy moments A lot of what happens in these stories is simply not explained or left open ended in ways that

READ Ä E-book, or Kindle E-pub Í Jean Ray [Ghouls in My Grave] EBOOK READ Ignore the cheesy title the book is entertaining and imaginative throughout but stories 2 5 and 6 are among the most atmospheric and disturbing supernatural stories in literature regardless of language or date of composition The translations of Lowell Blair in this collection are solemn and sonorous than the breezier translations
