I liked this but not as much as The Harlot s DaughterUsually you might attribute this to a sopho slump the first book is excellent because the author dedicated her life to getting it published and due to deadlines just didn t have the time to go over the follow up with a fine tooth combBut I know the lovely Blythe Gifford and I know that she actually wrote this one first Although published third this is her first completed novelI could see a lot of standard plot devices in this book that were less apparent in The Harlot s Daughter The hero and heroine have that ice coldfire hot relationship and neither one ever knows where they stand with the other which always makes me wonder why they even bother The obligatory crazy guy is pretty transparent The ending was a bit rushed a bit forced None of these issues distracted me in The Harlot s Daughter Her settings are still exuisite and her voice still strong I wish the servant girl Merkin had gotten a slightly happier ending and I was curious to know what happened to the aunt But Gifford continues to weave a story of struggle and love into a generally historically accurate moment I get the real sense that Gifford s characters do continue to live long past the The End and that Gifford wishes them all the bestSo I m still encouraged This was after all her first book I can see how her skills are getting sharper her instinct for organic drama better I m looking forward to reading The Knave and the Maiden to see if her writing really will get better with practice And I still Can t WAIT for Jane s follow up story I believe she s calling it Hidden Among Men Start Saving NOW and read The Harlot s Daughter first
