A Pocket Full Of Rye by Agartha Christie is the sixth installment of A Miss Marple Mystery set in Yewtree Lodge England Featuring Miss Jane Marple A resident of St Mary Mead She trained Gladys Martin in the duties of services in a home or at a restaurant Gladys Martin Parlour Maid at Yewtree Lodge the family mansion of the Fortescue family Murdered by taking a cup of tea Rex Fortescue a wealthy businessman is poisoned and the action begins immediately suffering from a fits and demanding to know what the secretary has put in his tea He is rushed to hospital where he dies Curiously there appears to be no trace of poison in his mug but there is some cereals in his pocket Rye A literal pocket of Rye And things only gets weirder from there The news reaches the odious Fortescue family including Rex s two sons one business minded one estranged and their wives his outdoorsy daughter Rex s younger second wife Adele his sister in law Aunt Eiffie and the various staff that make up the team of servants at Yewtree Lodge Inspector Neele is put on the case and begins usual uestions and the second murder drops The reader s reaction In Agartha Christie s Novel the tea table offers far menace than a mere lovelorn lieutenant or penniless curate Here a chocolate cake presage delicious death A streaming bowl of porridge exhales funeral yew A lump of sugar sweetens a lump of arsenic It highlights the symbolic power of food and of food related ritual to thicken or to dillute a community s relationship Food is the thermometer that takes the temperature of village life from metaphorically dead dinner parties to fatal poisoning The reader will be introduced to the murder very uickly Where a murderer seems to follow a nursery rhyme With the beats on Sing a song of six pence A pocket full of rye Four and twenty blackbirds Baked in a pie When the pie was opened The birds began to sing Wasn t that a dainty dish To set before the King The King was in his country house Counting out his money The ueen was in the parlour Eating bread and honey The maid was in the garden Hanging out the clothes When down came a blackbird And perked her off her nose The best woman for the job Miss Marple and Inspector Neele of the local police While it is Miss Marple who throws light on the real murderer it is Inspector Neele who does most of the legwork In a number of Christie s novels characters appear without any proper introduction and this make confusion in readers mind In this part Agartha Christie made sure all the characters well developed and blend into the main plot There are the days of post world war England and rationing is still in place as is the difficulty of getting good stuff The mystery soon takes the children s rhyme and instead spin a story which takes the reader from Africa via Paris and paints a uniue impression of the blackbird of that rhyme You will never sing it again without thinking of this novel
